What Causes Most Pressure Washer Pump Problems?
A pressure washer pump takes a beating: constant vibration, mineral buildup, and thousands of pressure cycles wear down internal components long before the motor or engine driving it shows any strain. Most pressure washer pump repair calls trace back to one of four root causes.
Worn Pump Seals
Seals keep water in the high-pressure side of the pump and out of the crankcase. As they wear, water mixes with the oil (or leaks externally), and pressure output drops as the seal lets fluid bypass instead of building force. This is the single most common reason a pump needs service.
Cavitation Damage
Cavitation happens when the pump doesn’t get enough water on the inlet side, often from a clogged filter, kinked hose, or an undersized water supply. The pump tries to pull water that isn’t there, forming vapor bubbles that collapse violently against the internal components and pit the metal. Left unaddressed, cavitation destroys a pump far faster than normal wear.
Valve or Check Valve Failure
Small check valves inside the pump head control the direction of water flow with every stroke. If one sticks or wears out, you’ll see a drop in pressure, uneven flow, or a knocking sound as the pump fights against itself.
Cracked Pump Head
Freezing temperatures, over-pressurization, or age can crack the pump head itself. This is the most serious failure on this list and the one repair that almost always calls for professional assessment before running the unit again.
