Which Water Pump Parts Actually Wear Out
A centrifugal or trash pump is a simple machine. An engine spins an impeller, the impeller throws water outward, and the low pressure left behind pulls more water up the suction line. Everything that goes wrong goes wrong in one of two places: the path the water takes on the way in, or the seal that keeps water out of the bearings.
That is why the water pump parts that move are not the ones that fail. The engine and the pump housing outlive several sets of hose, gaskets and seals. It is the least glamorous half of the machine and the half nobody inspects.

1. Suction hose
Of all the water pump parts on a job site, this is the one most often substituted with whatever is on the truck. Suction hose is not discharge hose. It has to hold its shape against a vacuum, so it is built with a helix wire or a rigid wall. Discharge hose is built to hold pressure and will flatten the moment you put it on the inlet, which chokes flow and looks exactly like a failing pump. Check the hose for soft spots, a crushed helix, and cracking where it has been dragged over a curb a hundred times.
2. Strainer
The strainer keeps stones and debris out of the impeller, and it is the single most common reason a pump runs but moves nothing. Silt cakes the mesh, flow drops, the pump starts to cavitate, and the operator revs it harder, which makes the cavitation worse. Look for a bent basket, a missing strainer entirely, or one so blinded with clay you cannot see daylight through it.
3. Foot valve or check valve
A foot valve holds the water in the suction line between starts so the pump does not have to reprime from dry every time. When the flapper hardens or the seat picks up grit, the line drains back and the operator spends five minutes priming on every restart. That is a two dollar symptom of a small part.
4. Camlock fittings and gaskets
Cam and groove couplers make and break a hose connection in seconds, which is why every site uses them and why they take the most abuse. The failure is rarely the coupler body. It is the gasket, which takes a set, goes hard, and lets air in. Air on the suction side is invisible and it kills flow just as effectively as a plugged strainer. Bent cam arms and worn cam lugs are the other tell, and they are a safety problem as much as a flow problem, because a coupler that lets go under pressure moves fast.
5. Mechanical seal
The mechanical seal keeps water in the pump chamber and out of the bearings and engine. When it goes, you get a steady drip from the weep hole behind the volute, and eventually water in the oil. Running a pump with a failed seal is how a cheap repair turns into an engine. If the oil looks like coffee with cream in it, stop.
6. Impeller and wear plate
Abrasive water sands the impeller vanes down and opens the clearance between the impeller and the wear plate. Flow falls off gradually, so nobody notices until the pump takes twice as long to drop a trench. On many trash pumps the wear plate is shimmable, so you can restore clearance without replacing the impeller at all. That is worth asking about before you buy either one.
7. Discharge hose, clamps and the fill plug
The unglamorous rest of it. Lay-flat discharge hose splits at the fold lines, worm clamps rust open, and the priming plug gasket is the part everyone loses. A pump you cannot fill is a pump you cannot start.

What Size Suction Hose for a Trash Pump?
Match the hose to the pump inlet, never smaller. A 2 inch pump wants 2 inch suction hose, a 3 inch pump wants 3 inch, and stepping down to whatever is on the truck is the most common self-inflicted flow problem we see. Going larger on the suction side is acceptable and sometimes helpful on a long lift, but going smaller is not.
Two more rules save calls. Keep the suction run as short and as straight as you can, because every elbow and every metre of lift costs you flow. And keep the total suction lift within what the pump is rated for, which on most engine driven units is well under eight metres of vertical rise once you account for friction. Camlock Fittings and NPT Threads, Matched Properly
Most pump plumbing is a mix of cam and groove couplers and NPT pipe thread, and mismatching them is how a job stops. Camlocks come in lettered types, A through F plus DP and DC caps and plugs, and each type is either a male or female cam end paired with a specific thread or hose shank. The letter matters as much as the size.
Material matters as much as size when you are ordering water pump parts. Aluminum is light and common, stainless holds up in corrosive water, and polypropylene suits chemical transfer where metal would not last. Before You Dewater in Ontario, Check the Water Taking Rules
This one catches contractors out, and it has nothing to do with the pump.
In Ontario a Permit to Take Water is required for takings of more than 50,000 litres of water per day from the environment.
That threshold comes from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, whose Permit to Take Water program page sets it out under the Ontario Water Resources Act and Ontario Regulation 387/04. A 3 inch pump clears 50,000 litres well inside a shift, so the threshold arrives faster than most crews expect.
The taking can be from a lake, a stream, a river, a pond or groundwater. Since January 5, 2026 applications have to be submitted online through a ministry account, and permit holders also have to record daily volumes and report them on or before March 31 each year for the previous calendar year.
Some activities register through the Environmental Activity and Sector Registry instead of applying for a full permit. Ontarioās water taking guidance for the registry covers exactly two activities, water taking for road construction purposes and water taking for construction site dewatering, so it is worth reading before a dewatering job rather than after. None of this changes which water pump parts you need, but it does change whether the job can legally start.
How Often Water Pump Parts Need Replacing
There is no calendar for this, because the water decides. A pump moving clean water off a flat roof will run a season on the same gaskets. The same pump pulling silty water out of a trench in Simcoe County can blind a strainer in an afternoon and sand an impeller inside a year.
Judge by the water, not the hours. Abrasive or gritty water means checking the strainer daily and the impeller clearance every few months. Clean water means an annual look at the seal and the gaskets. Either way, replacing a gasket on your own schedule costs a few minutes, and replacing it at seven in the morning on a flooded site costs a great deal more.

Why does my pump run but not move water?
