Iron and steel supplies are the high-pressure hydraulic components that survive heat, shock and duty cycles no other plant sees: spiral hose for mill stand screwdown and gauge control circuits, fire sleeved assemblies near ladles and casters, high temperature fittings and adaptors, accumulator hardware for shear circuits, filtration that keeps mill scale out of servo valves, and crane festoon lines.
Nitro Industrial stocks these iron and steel supplies at two Ontario shops in Concord and Barrie, and crimps assemblies in house rather than only selling replacements. Most plants come to us with a circuit list or a failed assembly in hand.
A mill stand down is not the same as a machine down. The cost runs per minute, and it runs whether the fix takes an hour or a shift. Assemblies are built and repaired in house at both shops, and a standard build goes out the same day. Bring us the failed line, or both fittings plus an accurate length, and we will crimp a replacement while you wait.
When the line cannot come off the equipment, mobile crimping builds it on site. For scheduled turnarounds, send the assembly list ahead of the outage and we will have the builds staged instead of made in a panic at 2 a.m. We also build custom hydraulic power units for mill auxiliaries, and supply the power tools and health and safety gear your crews go through. We hold iron and steel supplies on the shelf for exactly this.
Stock depth makes any of that possible. Nitro is Gates‘ largest independent distributor of industrial and hydraulic hoses in Canada, so the iron and steel supplies behind a mill assembly, the spiral hose, couplings and adaptors, sit on our shelf rather than on a purchase order to another country.
Maintenance planners pick up at 8520 Jane St in Concord or 740 Huronia Rd in Barrie, and we ship across Canada for plants outside the GTA. If you carry a standing spares list, send it over and we will hold the components. Set up terms with the credit application, or contact the team with a list. Plants comparing notes across sites also read our aggregate and cement and automotive and manufacturing pages, plus the full list of industries we serve.
If you run more than one line or stand, send the circuit list and we will build the spares list against it. Most plants find eight or nine assemblies cover the machines that actually stop production. We keep the agreed iron and steel supplies list on file with hose type, ID, end style and clocking, so a reorder is a part number rather than another trip out to the stand with a tape.
Common questions we hear from teams in this sector, from choosing the right components to same-day repairs when a machine is down.
Start with the ambient temperature the assembly actually lives in, then the exposure risk. Heat resistant covers handle higher ambient temperature, fire sleeve adds protection against splash and radiant load, and stainless overbraid works where abrasion comes with the heat. The fitting and the sleeve have to be rated as well as the hose, or you have protected the middle and left both ends exposed. Send us the temperature, the pressure and a photo of the routing.
Usually not directly. Servo and proportional valves need fluid cleanliness held tight, often around ISO 16/14/11, and mill environments push against that constantly. Worn rod seals draw scale and cooling water past the gland, a plugged reservoir breather pulls dust in on every stroke, and filtration that was right at commissioning is undersized after a rebuild. Iron and steel supplies will not fix contamination, so fix the ingress path first, then the filtration, then look at the hose.
Attack it where it enters. Rod wipers and gland seals on cylinders exposed to scale and spray, a proper reservoir breather rather than an open fill cap, and filtration sized for the actual duty rather than the original drawing. Offline kidney loop filtration on a big reservoir does more than upsizing the return filter. Sample the fluid on a schedule so you have a trend line instead of a guess when a valve starts hunting.
Spiral. A shear is an impulse machine, and every cut sends a pressure spike back up the line. Two-wire braid can satisfy the working pressure calculation and still fail in months under that cycling, while four or six spiral is built for impulse. While you are in there, check accumulator precharge, because a flat accumulator turns every cut into a hammer blow. A spare relief cartridge belongs on the iron and steel supplies list here.
Yes, and the better move is to send the list before the outage starts. We stage the builds ahead of time so your crews pick up finished assemblies instead of waiting on a crimper at three in the morning. Standard assemblies are same-day if something turns up that was not on the list, and mobile crimping covers lines that cannot come off the equipment. Send the outage dates and we will stage the iron and steel supplies ahead.
Yes. We design and build custom hydraulic power units in house, sized to your flow, pressure, duty cycle and the space you have. Send a schematic, a specification, or just the machine and the duty you need it to do, and our team will work it out with you. We build the reservoir, pump, valving and assemblies as one package so you are not integrating parts from four suppliers on the plant floor.
We ship across Canada from stocked inventory, and both Ontario locations are open for counter pickup. Concord is at 8520 Jane St Units 7 to 9 and Barrie is at 740 Huronia Rd Unit 7. For plants outside Ontario, tell us your outage date when you order so we can confirm what is on the shelf, route the shipment to land ahead of the window, and hold the iron and steel supplies for it.
Yes. Fill out the credit application on our site to open terms. If your plant consumes the same builds every month, send us the list and we will hold the hose, couplings and adaptors so those assemblies are pulled and ready rather than quoted from scratch. Purchasing gets one supplier, one invoice and a predictable lead time, and standing stock means your iron and steel supplies are pulled instead of quoted each time.
It depends what you are washing. Cold water at good volume handles scale, dust and general washdown around the mill. Hot water pays for itself on oil and grease, so lube rooms, gearbox areas, roll shops and anywhere hydraulic fluid has soaked into concrete. Plants that clean both usually buy the hot water unit and run it cold when heat is not needed. We will quote the washer alongside the rest of your iron and steel supplies.
A mill stand down costs per minute, and it costs the same whether the fix takes an hour or a shift. The failures that stop a mill rarely announce themselves: cover checking near a caster, a plugged reservoir breather, a flat accumulator on a shear circuit.
Each one reads as minor right up to the moment it takes the line out. Put them on a route and check them cold, then stage the iron and steel supplies each one would need before the next outage.
