Hydraulic Hose Crimping: In-Shop and Mobile Service That Comes to You

Benchtop crimping machine closing a die set around a hydraulic hose and steel ferrule in a Nitro Industrial shop

Table of Contents

Hydraulic hose crimping is the process of pressing a metal ferrule onto the end of a hose at a precise, published diameter so the fitting and the hose behave as one part under full working pressure. Squeeze it to the right diameter and the assembly holds. Miss that diameter by a few thousandths of an inch and you get a weeping fitting, or a coupling that blows off the hose under load. Our team crimps Gates hose at the Barrie and Concord counters, and we send a mobile crimping truck across the GTA and Simcoe County when the machine cannot come to us.

If a line just let go and you want the short version, that is it. Below is how the crimp gets measured, what mobile service actually looks like in your yard, and what to bring so you leave with the right assembly on the first try.

What Is Hose Crimping?

Hydraulic hose crimping makes a mechanical joint with a press. The crimper closes a ring of hardened steel dies around the ferrule of a coupling that has been pushed onto the hose end, then squeezes that ferrule down to a set outside diameter. The ferrule bites through the cover into the wire reinforcement, locking the stem of the fitting inside the hose bore.

Nothing in that joint is glued, threaded, or clamped. It holds because metal has been deformed to an exact size against a known hose construction. That is why a crimp is specified by numbers instead of by feel: hose series, coupling series, die set, crimp length, and a final crimp diameter, all read off the manufacturer chart for that pairing.

Two things follow. A coupling from one brand pressed onto another brand of hose is a guess, because the charts only cover matched combinations. And a crimp cannot be corrected afterward. Once the dies close, the assembly is either inside tolerance or it is scrap. You cannot snug it up later the way you can a clamp.

A finished assembly with the calipers that verify it. The crimp flats and ridges are what gets measured.

How Is a Hydraulic Hose Crimping Job Measured?

With calipers, against a published number. After the press cycle, the crimp outside diameter is measured across the flats of the ferrule and checked against the spec for that exact hose and coupling combination. If it reads high, the coupling is under crimped and can leak or blow off. If it reads low, the ferrule has been driven too far and the wire reinforcement underneath is damaged.

A finished crimp should be measured with digital calipers and confirmed within the specified diameter tolerance.

Measuring and recording both fitting ends verifies the assembly before it enters service. Source: North American Construction Group, Hydraulic Hose Manufacturing – Crimping SOP, Revision 2, April 14, 2022.

That need for verification is why owning a crimper is not the same as running a hose bench. The press has to be set to the right die and pressure for the pairing in front of it, the operator has to measure the result rather than assume it, and the shop has to stock enough matched hose and couplings that the correct combination is on the shelf. We keep calipers at the bench and check the flats, because a crimp that looks fine and measures wrong is the one that comes back.

The hose layline does most of the identification work before the press ever closes. It prints the manufacturer, the hose series, the dash size, and the working pressure along the cover. If your old hose still has a readable layline, bring it, because that stripe of text answers most of the questions we would otherwise have to ask you.

Is There a Mobile Hydraulic Hose Crimping Service?

Yes, and it is the reason most people call us instead of driving in. Our mobile crimping truck carries a press, die sets, bulk hose, and couplings, so the assembly is built beside the machine that needs it. We run mobile hydraulic hose crimping across the Greater Toronto Area from Concord and across Simcoe County from Barrie.

Mobile makes sense when moving the equipment costs more than the repair does. An excavator in a pit, a dock leveller, a baler in the middle of a plant floor, a truck with a dead lift gate in someone else’s loading bay: none of those travel well. It also helps when a machine has several hoses to change at once, since the truck builds them back to back on site instead of you making two trips.

When you call, tell us what the machine is, roughly what size the line is, and whether you can get the failed hose off before we arrive. If the hose is already removed and waiting, the on site build takes about as long as it would at the counter. You can see the truck setup on our mobile crimper page, and our hose crimping service in Vaughan walks through the quality checks we run on every assembly.

In Shop or Mobile Crimping: Which Fits Your Situation?

In shop hydraulic hose crimping is faster and cheaper when the hose can travel. Mobile is cheaper overall when the machine cannot. Here is the honest split.

Situation Better at the counter Better on site
Hose can be removed and carried in Yes, usually built while you wait No need
Machine is stuck in a pit, plant, or yard Costs you a tow or a shutdown Yes, built beside the machine
Several hoses failing at once Workable if you bring all samples Yes, measured and built in one visit
Unusual or hard to identify fitting ends Yes, full fitting wall on hand Possible, call ahead with photos
Building spares before a shutdown Yes, bring the old assemblies Useful for large sets

If you are choosing between repairing one line and rebuilding a set, our guide to industrial hose assembly covers the three things worth settling before you order.

What Goes Wrong When a Crimp Is Off?

Four failures cover most of it: under crimping, over crimping, the wrong die set, and double crimping the same coupling. Under crimping leaves the ferrule loose enough to weep or let go under pressure spikes. Over crimping crushes the wire braid and creates a fatigue point that fails weeks later, well away from the shop that built it. Wrong dies do both at once, tight in some spots and loose in others. Double crimping is the one people do to themselves, running a coupling through the press twice because the first pass looked light.

None of that is cosmetic. Per Gates’ Safe Hydraulics manual, most hydraulic systems should be designed with a 4:1 safety factor, burst test pressure against maximum recommended working pressure, and that margin is what a bad crimp eats into first. A poorly built assembly can hold fine on a bench and still fail on a machine that spikes above its rated pressure.

Then there is the injury risk, which is the part people underestimate. The UK Health and Safety Executive issued a safety alert after a maintenance fitter died from a hydraulic injection injury while tensioning the track of a piling rig. In that alert, the HSE notes that serious reported injection incidents have occurred at pressures over 100 bar, roughly 1,450 psi, and that injection injury may occur at pressures as low as 7 bar, about 101.5 psi. A pinhole in a badly crimped line does not look dangerous. It is.

That is the whole argument for doing hydraulic hose crimping to spec rather than to a feel. If you want to see how the presses themselves differ, we compared the options in hose crimper types compared for speed and safety.

What Should You Bring So We Crimp It Right the First Time?

The failed hose. That is the single best thing, because it carries the layline, the fitting ends, and the real bend and length. Everything else on this list is a fallback when the hose is unavailable.

  • The old assembly, ends and all. Do not cut the fittings off before you come in, we match against them.
  • A photo of both ends if the hose has to stay on the machine, taken square on rather than at an angle.
  • The machine make and model. It narrows the fitting family fast when the ends are damaged.
  • Overall length measured end to end, plus the fitting orientation if one end is a 45 or 90 degree elbow.
  • Working pressure if you know it, or the layline text if it is still legible.

If you are not sure what the ends are, that is normal and it is not a problem. Thread identification at the counter takes a couple of minutes with a gauge and calipers, and there is no charge for it. Our guide to hose fittings and adaptors explains what we are looking at when we do it, and if you would rather check stock before driving over, our hydraulic hose near me page covers what each branch keeps on the shelf. For a line that has already failed and needs turning around today, see hydraulic hose repair near me.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hydraulic hose crimping?

It is the process of pressing a metal ferrule onto a hose end at a specified outside diameter so the coupling and hose hold rated pressure as a single assembly. The crimp is set by a machine using dies matched to that hose and coupling combination, then verified with calipers.

How long does it take to crimp a hydraulic hose?

Most single hose builds take a few minutes at the bench once the ends are identified, and customers are usually in and out inside the hour. Multi hose sets and uncommon fittings take longer, though they are still typically finished the same day.

Can I crimp a hydraulic hose myself?

Only with a proper press, the matched die set, the manufacturer crimp chart, and calipers to verify the result. Hydraulic hose crimping that is out by ten thousandths of an inch is out of spec, and it cannot be adjusted after the dies close. For anything carrying real pressure, have it built and measured on a bench.

Do you crimp hose brands other than Gates?

We work from matched hose and coupling charts, so the safe answer is bring it in and we will check. Mixing a coupling from one manufacturer onto another manufacturer’s hose falls outside published crimp specs, and we will tell you when a combination is not one we can stand behind.

How far do your mobile crimping trucks travel?

We cover the Greater Toronto Area out of Concord and Simcoe County out of Barrie. If you are on the edge of either area, call and ask, because it often comes down to the day’s schedule rather than the map.

Where We Crimp Hose, and How to Reach Us

We run two counters with crimp benches, and mobile trucks out of both. Concord sits at 8520 Jane St, Units 7 to 9, minutes off Highway 400, open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 5:30 and Saturday 9:00 to 1:00. Barrie is at 740 Huronia Rd, Unit 7, open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 5:30. Both carry Gates hose, couplings, and adapters in the sizes that move, which is what makes same visit builds possible in the first place.

Call the Concord counter at (905) 760-1711 or the Barrie counter at (249) 315-4673 to book mobile crimping or to have your fittings pulled before you arrive. Tell us the machine and the size and we will have the hose and ends waiting on the bench. You can also browse what we stock on our hoses and fittings page, or send the details through our contact form if the line is down but not urgent.
